The Purpose of Emotions
As teens and young adults, it is important to understand the purpose and role of emotions in our lives. Emotions are an integral part of who we are and how we interact with the world around us. They can be a powerful tool for self-expression and communication, as well as a source of motivation when making decisions or trying to decide on the best course of action.
At its core, emotions serve three primary purposes: to motivate us to take action – especially when it is necessary for our survival, to help make us aware of our own needs, and to help us communicate those wants and needs to those around us. In other words, emotions help guide our behavior by signaling what actions may be necessary in order for us to meet those needs or goals. For example, if you feel angry about something then this emotion might signal that you need justice or resolution from a situation, or perhaps you are feeling blocked from reaching an important goal or desired activity. This anger works to help motivate you to take steps towards achieving that resolution, such as speaking up about your feelings or finding ways to resolve the conflict, or it can give you the energy and focus to keep trying to get whatever it is that you are seeking.
In addition, understanding your own emotional state allows you to better communicate with others more effectively, since it helps provide clarity on what exactly it is that drives your thoughts and behaviors—and why they matter so much! This awareness also enables greater empathy, which leads not only stronger relationships, but also gives insight into how different people respond depending on their emotional states, which could help inform decision-making processes down the road when faced with similar situations again in life!
having an awareness around one’s own emotions and how they impact our thoughts and behaviors, provides valuable insights into both ourselves and those around us. It allows teens and young adults to gain greater control over their lives through thoughtful decision making informed by meaningful data points rather than relying on instincts alone.
Finally, seeking to better understand one’s own emotional responses allows individuals to learn more effective coping strategies over time by helping them navigate difficult moments without getting overwhelmed by strong feelings like anger or shame. Once the emotion is acknowledged and accepted, then it is much easier to move onto trying to “meet the need” of the emotion, which often resolves the feeling much faster than just trying to ignore or avoid it.
Overall, having an awareness around one’s own emotions and how they impact our thoughts and behaviors, provides valuable insights into both ourselves and those around us. It allows teens and young adults to gain greater control over their lives through thoughtful decision making informed by meaningful data points rather than relying on instincts alone. At Sage & Anchor, we excel at helping teens and young adults build their emotional vocabulary and learn effective ways to experience their feelings, so that they can lead more awesome and fulfilling lives!
