Returning to School Effectively
As summer wraps up, parents and teens across the country are getting ready for a new school year. Going back to school after summer can be an exciting time of transition – but it can also bring some stress or anxiety for the first few weeks. Here are some tips to help make the transition smoother and more successful:
1) Get organized early: Start planning ahead by making lists of what needs to be done before the homework and projects start rolling in. This may include setting up a routine or schedule, investing in a new planner or organizer, and trying out some ways to track due dates. With the stress of going back to school it can be easy to start forgetting what assignments are due when, so having a visual reminder or alerts can be helpful. Getting a working system in place early and sticking to it can reduce those overwhelming feelings that tend to come at the end of the quarter.
Take time to remind them that self care is just as important as academics in order for them succeed at their highest level possible.
2) Set realistic expectations: It’s important for both parents and teens to have realistic expectations about how things may go this school year. Talk with your teen about what they expect from themselves academically throughout the semester, and share your own expectations with them. This will help both of you understand each other’s goals, foster accountability, and reduce the potential for conflict when there are any changes in academic performance.
3) Prioritize mental health: School is stressful enough. For teens, it can definitely feel like a full time job with constant pressure and no breaks. Make sure your teen has access to whatever resources they need (e.g. mental health professionals, support groups, peer and community groups, clubs and activities) should they start feeling overwhelmed during their academic journey this year. Take time to remind them that self care is just as important as academics in order for them succeed at their highest level possible.
4) Take advantage of technology tools available: Technology, like online tutoring platforms, virtual classrooms, and video conferencing apps, can provide extra assistance if needed – whether its catching up on missed work or providing additional learning opportunities outside regular classes. Teens learn at different paces and in different ways, so it can be helpful to try different methods for reinforcing their learning. Utilizing these technologies can also give students more control over their educational experience and gain a sense of competency.
Settling back into school after summer doesn’t have to be an overwhelming process – with proper preparation and communication between parents and teens, everyone involved can feel confident in their ability to navigate though uncertain times together!
