Parent/Caregiver Involvement in Therapy
Parent/caregiver involvement is essential in the success of therapy for teens.
Research has shown that when a parent or caregiver is actively involved in their teen’s treatment, the outcomes can be significantly improved. This is why it’s so important for families to build relationships with providers throughout the course of a teen’s therapy experience.
When parent/caregivers become involved, they often have more insight into their teen’s behavior and can provide valuable information to help guide treatment decisions. They also serve as an advocate for their teens during times when teens may not feel comfortable speaking up or advocating for certain treatments or interventions that could benefit them most effectively. Additionally, research shows that parental involvement increases motivation and compliance with therapeutic goals by providing support at home, which helps reinforce the skills and strategies that teens are learning in session. This helps build consistency between sessions as well as outside environments, such as school settings, where behavioral or emotional issues may arise due to different environmental factors than those present within a clinical setting.
open communication and feedback throughout treatment delivery assists in ensuring proper follow-up regarding progress, any challenges faced along the way…
By working to partner with providers, parents/caregivers can help create an atmosphere of collaboration, which sets expectations early on about how everyone will work together towards common goals set forth by all parties (teens, family, and therapist). In addition to this collaboration, open communication and feedback throughout treatment delivery assists in ensuring proper follow-up regarding progress, any challenges faced along the way, and outside factors that impact social and emotional wellbeing.
Overall, when parents/caregivers get involved as a supportive component of the therapeutic relationship between teen and therapist, it can drive positive results and therapeutic gains. Teens can still have their privacy and peace of mind, yet rest assured knowing that there are adults who truly care about their wellbeing and are invested in their progress. At Sage & Anchor, we value parent/caregiver involvement, and welcome the opportunity to have them on the team with us!
